Jock Hiram Tyus was born on March 15, 1956, in Highland Park, Michigan, to Juanita and Lindsay Tyus. He was raised in the Greater Quinn AME Church where he also participated in the Boy Scouts of America. Jock attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Cass Technical High School.
